From the Desk of…
Hello. I’ve forgotten what day of the week it is, and I’m very tired, and I’m not sure how much quality commentary my frazzled brain can fire out. A lot of stories are developing still, so any updates would be fragmentary at best. I may also have broken my foot, or I just need to stop going to that place.
Mark Sigrist ended up winning the primary for Ohio House 10, by the way. 20 votes. I know you’ve been on pins and needles.
Ohio is leading the nation in tornadoes this year. We’re #1, baby!
A Columbus Division of Police officer who while on duty had sexual relations with a woman has - get this - destroyed the evidence of said relations. This is both a crime and par for the course for CDP.
Shawn Fain’s United Auto Workers chalked up a big win after a successful unionizing drive in a Tennessee Volkwagen plant last week. Fain, whose bold tactics have made him the terror of bosses across the country, claims it to be the first of many such victories in his campaign to organize the nation’s non-union auto plants. I’ll pull this quote from Fain in full:
The foundation of all religion is love – love of your fellow human beings. It’s important when we talk as workers and as labor that we talk about these things, that everything we do is about making life better for human beings. When three families have as much wealth as the bottom 50% of Americans, that’s the antithesis of everything that religion teaches. I’ll continue to lean on my faith. I don’t keep that any secret.
Only time will tell if this old-time religion will play across the nation. It is, however, good enough for me. In the meantime, here’s an interview with Shawn by the iconic John Russell. (Ed. Note: John, we should get some 1AM Tee Jaye’s when you’re in town next!)
Speaking of wins for the workers, the Federal Trade Commission approved a ban on noncompete agreements. This greatly improves the bargaining position of workers in the marketplace, so expect capital to pull out all the stops in trying to prevent it from actually happening.
Other stories like the Trump trial and the DeWine dark money can wait until next week. I want to sleep for one million years.

At the Movies
I was so pleased to catch The People’s Joker this weekend. For a while, I thought I might never see it.
Late Night with the Devil (2023), dir. Cameron Cairnes, Colin Cairnes ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Yeah, I mean... for a movie that seems so interested in the details, it really did cut some corners. This is not about the use of AI, but that kerfuffle is illustrative of a number of my problems with it. Anyone who has read or listened to my ramblings about found footage should know well that I would've much rather seen four feeds of 4:3 footage, ideally with as few cuts and edits as possible, perhaps in a 2x2 set-up. Like they would've seen it in the editing bay during broadcast. Why is this "master tape" so heavily touched? Just show me the raw camera outputs if it's so "real." Let me look from Camera 1 to Camera 3 in real time as events are unfolding.
I did not anticipate the Bohemian Grove angle, and I did appreciate that incorporation of elements. Even with all my grousing, there is a lot I liked about it.
The People’s Joker (2022), dir. Vera Drew ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
Listen, I'm not qualified to unpack what it is or ain't saying, but I can tell you I was impressed with Vera's ability to weave both humor and heartfelt sincerity through the work. I had a blast, and I loved the soundtrack. She clearly knows what she's doing and how to achieve her vision. Awesome show, great job.
Good Morning (1959), dir. Yasujiro Ozu ⭐⭐⭐⭐
if they made this movie today the kids would be wanting IPAD to play FORTNITE while watching FAMILY GUY videos 🤣🤣🤣
One Picture
Thank God for good news.
In closing,
Until next time, catch up on some sleep. That’s what I’ll be doing instead of torturing some metaphor down here. Go on, take a nap. No one will miss you at work, probably.
