From the Desk of…
Hope everyone stayed warm during the weather event last week. Lots of to-do about clearing the roads and traveling for the holiday. It did get cold enough that my heater was not able to keep up with the heat loss, and of course I think we all got emails asking us to reduce our power consumption to prevent rolling blackouts. Really makes one feel optimistic about the future sustainability of modern life. Thankfully, that’s the kind of storm that happens “once in a decade,” so we’ll never have to worry about it again. Let’s see what was on my mind this past week…
The Brain Dump
is it good when the power company sends you an email to warn you about a multi-day outage before the storm arrives
is that good
just saw a dude in shorts walk down the road
disappointed in this current generation of kids. not one knock on the door offering to shovel the walk or my drive for money. probably too busy playing their nintendos and looking at their phones to do a little work. really worried about the future of this country. if it has one.
has anyone tried shooting at the weather, like, with a gun?
okay. putting my cap on and settling my brain for a long winter's nap now. i swear to god if i hear so much as a creature stirring, i am going to lose it, let alone if such a clatter were to arise.
That’s a bit one-note, isn’t it? I didn’t even get to talk about any stories like the guy who lied about his whole life to get into Congress or the two Black women who found that missing baby or the bold claim that right-wing extremists coordinate with local police.
At the Movies
I will leave my house and watch new things soon, I promise.
Elvis (2022), dir. Baz Luhrmann ⭐⭐⭐⭐
shortlisted for Most Picture of 2022
at one point Austin Butler unironically says "listen, Jack" and I guffawed
Adult Swim Yule Log (2022), dir. Casper Kelly ⭐⭐⭐
Fine, but not the transcendent Yule Log experience I hoped for. I kinda wished I had just watched Tim Dunn's Yule Log with Christmas Music and Loud Family Fighting three times.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), dir. Rian Johnson ⭐⭐⭐⭐
the first film to spend a billion dollars on bits and music licenses
Yeah, I'm comfortable where this landed. I think my problem is that while being - I think - a loving homage to Clue as both a game and film, I just enjoy playing and watching Clue more.
Also despite all its cleverness, I think it collapses in the third act. The tactical error with the envelope is just implausible to me, and it feels like a forced set-up to a pay-off that is, to me, less than gratifying.
I will watch the third one though.
I make no promises about what I’m going to watch next.
One Picture
I also don’t think I succeeded in this promise.
In closing,
See you next year.
