From the Desk of…
Please remind me in the future that I am not allowed to slip on my stairs and turn into a Looney Tunes accordion at any given point, but I’m especially not allowed to on New Year’s Eve. Hello and welcome to the curious amount of new subscribers this week, something I presume can only be related to the misadventures of a self-described “insane Communist blogger” currently crowing about recent events at the Ohio Statehouse. What a time for legislative houses, am I right? Between the soft coup in Ohio for Speaker Jason Stephens that reminds us of Householder’s most recent win on similar lines, the sort of West Wing-style “good government” rhetoric we’ll be hearing about Pennsylvania after electing Speaker Mark Rozzi (though time will tell what really happens), and the federal House failing for the first time in a century to elect a speaker on the first vote, let alone failing three times and adjourning. Nancy, I know you have my number… call me, and I’ll get it done, just like Michael Bloomberg will give me one million dollars. Anyway, what fell out of my brain this week?

putting on my Oakleys and going out to the car to record a video about how the refs stole the Peach Bowl from OSU
bad time to announce it but i'm speaker of the house now
Oh, right, the bowl games. The timing of the loss to being almost precisely midnight was pretty funny, conceptually. If that makes you mad, imagine if it had gone the other way. It’s objectively funny timing.
Anyway, I regret very little about my resistance to being pushed into football. The bodies of the players take a terrible toll, and to what end? That was the chief discussion we had during the Peach Bowl, and that was prior to Damar Hamlin suffering cardiac arrest on the field the next night.
At the Movies
What did I watch recently? I feel like I fell off in my movie watching. Oh, well, there was that five-hour flick.
The Pricemaster (2001), dir. Richard H. Perry, Wes Martin ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Until the End of the World (1991), dir. Wim Wenders ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
the world's first strand-type movie, a movie about the fragility of modern life and the conveniences we take for granted, conveniences we forget were meant to help us connect with each other and make music together, a movie about how we can never go home again and about the futility and danger of attempting to recreate the past instead of moving forward, a movie about how the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world and about the importance of being present with who you're with in the moment you're present with them
also the music is cool
This Place Rules (2022), dir. Andrew Callaghan ⭐⭐⭐⭐
an admirable first effort from one of the best journalists currently working
If you aren’t familiar yet with Andrew Callaghan, be it from his time with All Gas No Brakes or his current stint at Channel 5, here’s an older video of his covering a gathering of Bigfoot hunters and more recent coverage of a Hollywood antivax rally. I’m also linking The Pricemaster again, specifically to the fourth minute because you should at least watch one minute of it, and that’s a good minute to get the vibe.
One Picture
I’m still learning the ropes of Instagram. Not sure I get it.
In closing,
Maybe we’ll have a Speaker of the House the next time I write you. Maybe it’ll even be me!
