From the Desk of…
Let’s try to find the GOOD stuff to close out this month. Yes, closing the books on the second month of 2023 already. Next dispatch will be all the way from March. The two groups working on the abortion rights amendments decided to put aside their disagreements for now and work together on one unified ballot issue in November, for which they’ll need 413,000 signatures and are aiming to collect, like, a million. You can read the full text of the proposed amendment here. Turns out that train company what crashed the train in East Palestine has been bribing, sorry, “plying,” politicians for years. Starting to think regulatory capture might be a bad thing… like last week, keep up with my pal John Russell for the best on-the-ground reporting you’ll get there. One Ohio politician is trying to sneak it into the budget that cities of over 300,000 people can’t put bike lanes down the middle of streets? Very cool thing, not at all in violation of the principles of home rule, definitely an important thing to worry about right now. I feel like there was something else, but if I can’t remember it now, then I guess I’m not gonna remember it. Speaking of remembering, did I think anything good this week?

['90s guy trying to do the right thing but was only half-paying attention] are these plastic rings, uhh, Ecco-friendly?
trying to wrap my head around the gulf of time between Carter's presidency and now. imagine if Eisenhower died in 9/11
just had someone bring up to me that even as recently as the '90s my film library would probably have cost at least $50,000 at retail, and that's without factoring in the rarity of some things or the time and effort to import international features
hmm... this gives me an idea
Honestly? Bit of a mid week, in reviewing it. Probably means the brain was too healthy to come up with good posts, or I was too busy playing bideo james.
At the Movies
Oh, I must have been busy. Marked decrease in activity time here.
Grey Gardens (1975), dirs. Albert and David Maysles ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐❤️
"It's very difficult to keep the line between the past and the present... Do you know what I mean?"
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), dir. Ang Lee ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐❤️
amazing that they were able to save so much on the special effects budget by simply having Michelle do all that stuff
Scorpio Rising (1963), dir. Kenneth Anger ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐❤️
Simply tremendous filmmaking.
Both can and can’t believe I’ll be too busy seeing Cocaine Bear this weekend to meet Guy Maddin, but maybe Guy Maddin will go see Cocaine Bear with me.
One Picture
For your health.
In closing,
Remember what they say about March: it brings May flowers. And what do May flowers bring? OH THE OTHER NEWS STORY WAS THAT MIKE DEWINE IS BANNING THOSE STINKY TREES
