From the Desk of…
Wow, I’ve really been showing my age this week. That’s a Johnny Mathis reference and a Pat Boone reference less than a day apart. Probably need to do some penance by consuming at least one new media. I don’t think I can count episodes of Farmer Wants a Wife. Turns out Larry Householder is still corrupt, what with these secret dark money payments. The weather has been good enough for me to start wearing shorts again, much to the displeasure of those around me. A former president pleaded not guilty to 34 felony charges. I don’t expect the trial to ever actually happen, frankly. Prove me wrong! Seems that enough people in Wisconsin didn’t like it so much that they voted to shift the power in their Supreme Court from conservative to liberal. I look forward to the impeachment proceedings from the gerrymandered Republican supermajority! Brandon Johnson, whom Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot assured supporters “isn’t going to be the mayor of this city,” is going to be the mayor of that city after defeating Paul Vallas last night. A progressive county commissioner and teachers’ union organizer beating the man who privatized every school he could get his hands on? We’ll see what’s next for that fair city, but my hunch is obstruction from moneyed interests and a lot of national media carrying water for them.
Consider instead planning a spring trip to Columbus, a very politically stable town.
The Brain Dump
do you think the minions have a union
it's so reassuring to be the best driver in Columbus
[getting up to the mic at Kerouac] ladies and gentlemen, this is mambo number five
one thing that's good at a restaurant is bread
going to the club with a fat sack of Sacagaweas and Susans B. Anthony and making it hail
Tough to winnow down the stuff from the Dump this week! Something must have been pushing my two neurons together in just the right way. I think this is the most exclamation points I’ve used in a newsletter. I’m sorry.
At the Movies
Went on a weird Anthony Hickox bender this week, which is probably the first time anyone has ever said that before.
The Birdcage (1996), dir. Mike Nichols ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
I think, of all the movies I know, this is the one I'd have wanted most to work on. There's no way that this wasn't a shoot of sheer delight.
Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989), dir. Anthony Hickox ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
it would not have taken much for someone to convince me this movie was a dream I had
The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972), dir. Charles B. Pierce ⭐⭐⭐⭐
that monster can fouke off
I’ll probably make it back to theaters (and maybe even new releases!) soon.
