From the Desk of…
It got cold again. Unseasonable. Surprising everyone, the Supreme Court upholds the status quo of the Voting Rights Act instead of gutting it further. This decision should, I think, swing the House of Representatives about five seats in the Dem direction. The cosmic ballet goes on. Trump, if you haven’t seen this, has been arrested and has plead not guilty to [checks docket] felonies under the Espionage Act. Could be our second president to serve non-consecutive terms, but our first to pardon himself! “Oh, but Meow, surely he couldn’t win from prison!” Yeah. Alright. Cracker Barrel, the historically anti-gay restaurant with a name that works on several levels, has gone woke. Frankly, I think it’s a baffling move. I can’t imagine the person who is going to choose Cracker Barrel now because it’s gone woke. That said, anyone doing these boycotts is just plain “eg-no-ra-moose.” On a personal note, I’ve gotten some stuff off my plate, so I should have more time to click the neurons together and pay attention to the news. It’s so healthy for me, to stay updated on the world. McDonald’s has started Grimace’s birthday celebration, so that’s my lunch settled.
Pat Robertson, televangelist goon and right-wing stooge, died at 93. I can only hope that The Iron Sheik broke his back and made him humble on his way to Hell. Oh, and the Unabomber. Always in threes…
The Brain Dump
it's gonna be so epic in the Zelda movie when Link's late for Hero Lessons and he's running through Kakariko Village while Good Charlotte's "The Anthem" plays
ah, midnight. time to go into the basement and slam the washing machine doors as loud as possible
plugging through the To-Do list today (going through and crossing a bunch of things off by deciding I'm just not going to do them anymore)
"learn to drive, moron," i mutter under my breath at the dude who an unsafe lane change, moments before i discover a red bull can lodged under my brake pedal and crash through the windows of the hudson taco bell at 67 mph
Huntington Bank is lowkey goated when grabbing a pen real quick is the vibe
I did accidentally a whole word there, didn’t I? Oh well.
At the Movies
I didn’t make it to the cinema.
Sleepaway Camp (1983), dir. Robert Hiltzik ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
Emphasis on the camp. The baseball scene in this is cinema, and the throughline from this to Wet Hot American Summer is clear. That's before applying any critical lenses to the film's treatment of gender and sexuality - although, I would hesitate to say that the film INTENDED to say some of the things it can be read as saying, as I would err on the side of "failed to be as -phobic and -misic as it wanted" over "secretly progressively critiquing things."
It is, effectively, the world that our current crop of fascists believe they live in though, what with the kids all wearing crop tops and the aunt being a doctor and such.
Brain Damage (1988), dir. Frank Henenlotter ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
Henenlotter went wild with this one. Like, there's an exact moment where it clicks into place, and you can watch it click in real time when you screen it for folks. Before that moment, it's like 'ok... where is this going,' and it clicks, and you can see people relax and let it start washing over them, not unlike a comforting hallucination brought on by some sort of ancient worm-like creature.
Happy Together (1997), dir. Wong Kar-wai ⭐⭐⭐⭐
i think if i went to argentina i would be able to solve all of my problems. rip to these guys but i'm different
you could've given me a million guesses for the needle drop and i'd have never gotten there. i was in tears
If I see one picture in theaters this weekend, I’m making it The City of Lost Children.
One Picture
This is real.
In closing,
Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a rabbit in the yard I need to contact the authorities about.
