From the Desk of…
As I woke up this morning from uneasy dreams I found myself transformed in my bed into a gigantic insect almost two hours before my alarm for no reason, I thought to myself, “why is this happening on a day where I have to work instead of on literally any other day?” The day has felt like taffy, and so too do I - pulled too thin and sold in shops by the sea. So now, at the end of such a day, I pull out my digital quill and start writing to you, the readers. So what happened? Well, I was right about the submarine implosion. I’ll make no further comment on it. Most of you have already seen every joke that could ever be made about the subject. Seems like David Zaslav is, in true private equity fashion, killing Turner Classic Movies. I know I’d be a completely different person without its programming, although perhaps I’d be a better person. If nothing else, the loss of such a cultural archive only reinforces to me the importance that I take actions to ensure archival and distribution of cinema. Well, of movies, at least. Busy weekend in the city, what with ComFest and the music festival at Kemba and Origins. We didn’t have a thunderstorm. SCOTUS rejected the independent state legislature theory of election law, which is alright-to-cool but has some backdoor traps if we don’t watch out. Get rid of Marbury v. Madison already! Greyhound is moving to a place where nobody can get to it, which is going to do great stuff for its ridership.
Oh, and Columbus is about to spend several million dollars to figure out what to do with its statue of Christopher Columbus. I can’t think of a way to express my thoughts that’s fit to print, so I’ll leave it at this: >:(
The Brain Dump
Columbus would be brought to its knees if the United Dairy Farmers went on strike
they should invent a vape that smells like cigarettes
just slipped a few SIGNED copies of my chapbook (handstapled print-outs of my tweets) onto the shelves at Prologue
people romanticize the philosophical academies of ancient Greece but they were realistically probably more like that bodybuilding forum thread where people argue about how many days are in a week
oh yeah forgot last night that there was a sound from the closet loud enough to wake me up and then the door swung open so i hope that doesn't happen again
I think the closet thing is just like a temperature thing. Or maybe there’s too much on the door. Or maybe I’ll die!
At the Movies
Made it out to the cinemas a few times, actually. Probably see some stuff this coming week as well. Everything’s coming up Meow.
Asteroid City (2023), dir. Wes Anderson ⭐⭐⭐⭐
great soundtrack. some very relatable characters, regrettably. considered giving five stars for the incredible cameo appearance (the Roadrunner) but I guess they couldn't get Wile E. despite the heavy coyote foreshadowing. alas
A Fish Called Wanda (1988), dir. Charles Crichton ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Some good bits still. Kevin Kline won an Oscar for this? Neat. I remember laughing more. Oh well. Steamroller Survivals of 1988 Pt One in the books.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), dir. Robert Zemeckis ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
This film is nothing short of miraculous. The scene where Roger bursts through a wall because he cannot help but do a bit? So relatable. I've simply got to get these Toontown modules printed for my noir board game. Anyway, Steamroller Survivals of 1988 Pt Two is done.
Probably seeing Jaws for the 4th, as is my custom.
One Picture
He’s so real for this.
In closing,
Josh Billings, who exists predominantly in the shadows of Mark Twain these days, said something to the effect that people who seek your advice aren’t looking to have their ideas improved upon so much as they want their existing ideas validated. While that can be true, what’s overlooked here is the connection that can be forged by the simple act of lending an empathetic ear. Even when you don’t think your points are going to get through, just listening can be profoundly impactful, and it builds the genuine connection that could help you help them help themselves in the future. Until next time, stay well and show kindness to those around you.
