From the Desk of…
I had zero tricker treaters last night. That’s about what I expected, but it doesn’t mean I can’t still be disappointed. Shame I bought all this candy though. When will I learn that my actions have consequences? I’m dead tired from Halloweening as well as work stuff, so let’s scroll through some news real quick. Smarter and funnier people than I are covering Connor Stalions, so I’ll spare you.
Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) is our new Speaker of the House, all but assuring the rapid descent of the country in Christofascism signalling as Time said “the end of Reagan’s GOP” due to his embrace of “far-right policies” and his work to undermine the results of the 2020 election. Cool!
Panera Bread is finally delivering the goods: lemonade that can kill you. Of course I had one over the weekend. It didn’t kill me, but I did feel like I could kill God for a few hours before staying up until about 3 AM (this is atypical). It didn’t taste very good, and I won’t be doing it again.
In a move that “cements a female majority on Missouri’s highest court for the first time in state history,” the Honorable Ginger Gooch has been appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court. I’m sure we’ve all come to terms with hearing yet another dissent from Judge Gooch. I know I am.
As an earthquake rolled across the Bay Area Friday night, one man took time out of his busy night to speak to the news about his experiences. “I was just slammin' ‘Dollaritas' up at the Applebee's with some friends and it was a big shake. It was only like, probably a couple of seconds. Everyone stopped talking. It was a big one.” We should all strive to be more like Steve, I think.
Alright, that’s enough. If you haven’t voted yet, go vote. If you want to wait until Tuesday, fine. Early vote has extended hours right now though. 7:30 to 7:30 for the rest of the week, then 8-4 on Saturday and 1-5 on Sunday. Remember, no early voting on the Monday before the election since Republicans are dillweeds. Beyond that, you’ll have Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30. Don’t forget to bring an ID since Republicans are dillweeds. For the love of God, please vote Yes on 1. I would also love 2, if only to fix the potholes, but if we don’t pass 1, then I’m probably Googling “lowest cost of living areas near me” and seeing what states pop up.

That’s right, folks. In the grand tradition of… I dunno, the past couple years, I’m starting to think about that there Christmas Challenge now that the October stuff is winding down. I’ve a few tricks up my sleeve, but I mostly have to figure out how to stop my trophy budget from exploding like it did last year. Y’all are just so… full of mirth and merriment. Which is the point. So I guess I can’t complain. But damn.
At the Movies
no theater time and no plex time make meow go something something
Candyman (1992), dir. Bernard Rose ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
I am rumor. It is a blessed condition, believe me. To be whispered about at street corners. To live in other people's dreams, but not to have to be. Do you understand?
Midsommar (2019), dir. Ari Aster ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
begrudgingly five stars. the art and production design is too good, there are too many good things, and i think it's aster's worst film. it's good. i dunno. it just... everyone gets to make The Wizard of Oz once.
A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), dir. Jack Sholder ⭐⭐⭐⭐
this movie is so gay [affirmational]
Nah, but I do wish I’d had time to pop out for Suitable Flesh recently. Sadly… Alan Wake II has taken precedent.

In closing,
Missing crime fiction author Alan Wake once said that a writer is a light that reveals the world of his story from darkness. In an era where the shadows of uncertainty and complexity loom large, the creative process becomes an intricate dance of art and expression. Like lighthouses in the fog, artists navigate our dark world, striving to bring forth works that not only captivate but also illuminate the intermediacies, the interconnections, and the interpretations we all share… or do we? As an editor once told me, a reality is just what we tell each other it is. If the art we create and consume is full of horrors and despair, if all we can reveal to each other is hate and fear and darkness… well, we may get more than we bargained for.
Until next time, start planning the table settings. More holidays will be here before you know it.
