Congrats, lucky subscriber! As a reward, you are now the owner of Steamboat Willie and its star, Mickey Mouse! You’re winner!
Manuel Rocha, “whose two-decade career as a U.S. diplomat included top posts in Bolivia, Argentina, and the U.S. Interests Section in Havana,” turned out be a spy for Cuba since 1981. Forty years a mole! Compromised during the Reagan years! It’ll make a great limited series at some point.
Well, DeWine vetoed House Bill 68. Thanks to everyone who contacted his office. Of course, while we must celebrate every victory for trans rights that we come across, we do not have to hand it to Mike DeWine. Further, the Statehouse hobgoblins ended their vacation early to come in and try to override his veto. Stay tuned, folks.
I’m tired. Returning to work is kicking my keister. This is what you’re getting today. Leave me alone.

At the Movies
You’d better believe I’m catching some of these. Vampire flicks from popular to obscure in a theater? Yeah. I’m an easy mark.
RoboCop (1987), dir. Paul Verhoeven ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
The Robo Wants An Oreo story is true. I feel it in my heart. I know it.
Also, the first board room scene is an all-timer. Rob Bottin went off.
When he does the good stuff, that's the Robo. When he does the bad stuff, that's the Cop.
A Boy and His Dog (1975), dir. L.Q. Jones ⭐⭐⭐⭐
it's smarter than it is good, but you'll have that with Harlan

Casablanca (1942), dir. Michael Curtiz ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
In the Dark Times of 2020, there were two movies I felt confident enough in breaking down to do real-time lectures over Zoom for friends who had nothing better to do. One was the bona-fide classic Gremlins 2: The New Batch. The other was this underseen gem called Casablanca. It may never get counted in my list of favorite films when I'm asked, but it is easily one of the greatest films. On the flip side, one of the biggest Ls in cinematic history was Max Steiner not coming up with an original tune to replace "As Time Goes By" so that he could get the royalties off it. Many... many royalties.
Man, Bogie just tears it up in this one. A long time ago, I was on a group trip to Disney Orlando, and my best friend and I were more excited than anything at the prospect of going on The Great Movie Ride and then having the Bogie animatronic say "here's looking at you, kid" while we were in the room because "it'll be like he's looking at us!" When we rode through the Casablanca section and the timing was such that we weren't in the room for that line. It was a major disappointment, and also we watched a cast member get fired for misspeaking over the PA. Where was I? Oh right, anyway, this is a perfect movie.
Congrats to the thirteen people who completed the Christmas Challenge 2023. Don’t make me chase down those trinket retrieval forms!

In closing,
The turning of the year signals for many a re-examination of ourselves, our values, and our behaviors. Whatever rocks you may be turning over, I hope you don’t find too many bugs while you’re landscaping.
Until next time, try to keep warm and get some sleep in.
