From the Desk of…
I’ve a lot going on this week, so I’ll hit the highpoints and leave you to it.
Surprising few, the Ohio Senate voted to overturn the governor’s veto on HB68. As such, come end of April, the draconian cruelties of Pastor Representative Gary Click will be inflicted on trans children throughout the state. Don’t take it from me; listen to the kids. The ACLU is challenging, but I’m not holding my breath.
In other news, the workers at the Kaleidoscope Youth Center have announced the formation of a union, claiming 100% of eligible workers have signed authorization cards. The union, which would affiliate them with the Ohio Federation of Teachers, is seeking voluntary recognition at this juncture. To learn more about how Kaleidoscope makes a difference for queer youth in Central Ohio, I’ll route you over to their website.
A study has shown that Central Ohio would get like $30 million dollars a year if we built some damn trains. This means we probably won’t build the damn trains. Meanwhile, at the bus station that our mayor engaged in ex parte communications over, a guard had his ear bitten off. It’s great to live in Columbus! Get involved with Transit Columbus today!
The Brain Dump
[somberly as the coffin is lowered into the grave] safelite repair, safelite replace
mmm... two spaghetti meals in one day
where did butterscotch go, as a flavor. we used to be a proper country
oh to be a hobbit lazily floating down a river looking upon the argonath
making an ohioan's pie (1 pound of Bob Evans sausage with a can of mixed vegetables covered with a layer of Bob Evans mashed potatoes)
I guess I was too busy reading old D&D adventure modules to do much posting. Sorry! Also, I swear to all winners of the Christmas Challenge that your trinkets will be mailed this week.
At the Movies
Okay. At least I saw a movie made this century at the theaters this time.
Krull (1983), dir. Peter Yates ⭐⭐⭐
in the early '90s I rented a fantasy movie on VHS, or I caught it on cable, or my brain combined like three movies in a dream at some point, and I've ever since been trying to track it down. in the event that it was a dream, it was probably like 40% Krull. this is reflected in my unproduced fantasy screenplay.
this is not a good movie, but they should let me remake it. science fantasy is woefully underrepresented in film. but also that is not a glaive.
Legend (1985), dir. Ridley Scott ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ❤️
It's so stupid we have to make movies for "money" instead of "making beautiful Romantic paintings come to life" or "covering all the actors in glitter for some reason." I always remember a lot more Tim Curry in this. I also remember in 2002 when I heard they were releasing a DVD set with the Director's Cut and I ran not walked to the store to get it.
Excalibur (1981), dir. John Boorman ⭐⭐⭐
They should let John Boorman make as many movies as he wants as expensively as he wants but with the understanding that by and large they will not be good. Still, very few directors have the vision to put such mythic images on the screen, and Boorman does it over and over and over. We just need to finance his brain to pull them out. This is not very good, but it has an accidentally incredible cast and everything is REAL (and expensive).
My mom LOVED this movie. Make of that what you will.
I really went on an ‘80s fantasy tear. Leave me alone.
One Picture
dudes will see this and think “hell yeah”
In closing,
Any loss, be it the death of a loved one, forgoing a dream, or giving up your identity, is an intricate and profound aspect of life. The aftermath can be overwhelming, plunging you into the depths of grief. In this, or perhaps through this, resilience becomes apparent. It’s not some shield against pain but a testament to your capacity to adapt, endure, and overcome the challenges life lays before you. It's a dynamic force that propels you forward into the unknown. It isn't just about surviving; it's about navigating the aftermath with an open heart and a renewed spirit to find new meaning in the life that remains.
Until next time, listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock your soul.
Hell yeah, what adventure modules are you reading?
